Traveling with Children with Sensory Needs

Traveling with children who have sensory needs or sensitivities can be a challenge. Not to mention, traveling over the holidays adds another potential layer of stress. The nonprofit organization Understood is an AMAZING resource for children with learning and thinking differences. Visit their post below for some great ideas on traveling with children who may have sensory needs:

Here are some of our tips for traveling with children who have sensory needs:

  1. Pack their favorite health and hygiene products. This way, your bathtime and getting ready routines on the road will include some familiar items that will provide your child a comforting sense of home in an unfamiliar place.

  2. Bring their favorite foods in your day bag. Take along, if possible, snacks and other foods that your child enjoys eating at home. This can help make mealtime on the road more comfortable.

  3. Bring a small container or bag of surprise toys to open on the plane or in the car. New-to-them items that will hold their interest - perhaps a whirling top, a liquid bubble timer, a magnetic maze, a book that makes sounds - may help manage or distract from the discomfort of being in the car all day or sitting on an airplane.

  4. Assume you will need extra time for every part of your trip. Whatever you need to do - pack the car, get everyone dressed, get to the airport, transfer flights, etc. - always incorporate more time than you think it will take.

  5. Model emotional regulation for your child. If something unexpected happens, such as a flight delay, narrate for your child what is going on. Acknowledge your feelings aloud and explain what's next. "Oh, it looks we have to wait an extra hour to board our plane! I'm feeling a bit upset about that. But these things happen, and that's ok. We will get there eventually. Let's find a way to pass the time - how about we play I Spy or go for a walk?"
